Meccha Chameleon Game Modes: Team Battle in 4.2.0

Team Battle joins Meccha Chameleon in update 4.2.0. Separate the new mode from maps, body types and private rooms, and check what the patch notes confirm.

Last updated: 2026-10-31

Team Battle is the new Meccha Chameleon game mode added in update 4.2.0. The developer published the update on October 28, 2026 (October 29 at 00:08 in Japan). If you are returning to the game, the old June mode list no longer covers the current release.

The update also adds two maps and three body types. Those are separate choices: Paper Island is a map, Octopus is a body type, and a private room is how you organize a session. None of those names is another game mode.

What Team Battle adds, and what is still unclear

The official Steam 4.2.0 announcement confirms Team Battle by name. The developer's 4.2.0 update page also shows its round-start and results screens.

The text notes do not give a full scoring formula, a required team size, a round-rotation rule or a tie-break procedure. Check the rules shown by your current game before planning a competitive session. We have not played a Team Battle match for this guide, so the screenshots and announcement are developer evidence, not a hands-on test.

For friends arranging a match:

  1. Update each copy of the game before choosing the session.
  2. Have the host confirm that the room is using Team Battle, rather than treating the selected map as the mode.
  3. Check the room's displayed rules and capacity before inviting the group. The patch notes do not establish an ideal lobby size for this mode.
  4. Share the room code. Follow the online joining guide if someone needs help finding the same session.
4.2.0 choice guide: Team Battle is a mode; Chaotic Kitchen and Paper Island are maps; Macho, Octopus and Polygon are body types; private lobbies and join codes organize a room.

Maps and bodies are separate from the mode

Chaotic Kitchen and Paper Island are the two maps named in 4.2.0. The same update adds Macho, Octopus and Polygon to the body selection. Do not read these names as extra modes or assume that a different body has different scoring rules.

The developer also says random map selection will no longer pick the same map twice in a row. That describes the random selector; it does not promise a particular map order. For general camouflage practice, use the paint guide, then check the scenery in the map you actually enter.

Clone and visibility changes to know before playing

There are two distinct clone changes in 4.2.0: the cooldown falls from 45 seconds to 5 seconds, while Overlook Points earned from a clone become half those earned from the original body. The shorter cooldown does not mean a clone earns the same points as a player body. The notes do not provide a complete scoring table, so do not turn that ratio into a made-up total.

The update adds an Overlook Lines toggle in Options and changes the main interface and body-selection screen. It also lists fixes for host Discovery Points, clone removal and some pose-related point issues. If an older video shows a different interface or a 45-second clone cooldown, check its version before following it.

What happened to Normal, Increasing Oni and Double?

Older guides use names such as Normal, Increasing Oni and Double, sometimes paired with Infection or Speed Hunt. The 4.2.0 changelog does not list every existing mode or confirm those aliases and recommended group sizes.

It also does not say those modes were removed. Read the descriptions in your installed version when comparing existing choices. The how-to-play guide covers the basic paint-and-hide idea; the controls guide covers the inputs.

Is a private room a different mode?

A private room organizes who joins a session; it is not evidence of a separate rule set called “Custom Rooms.” Choose the room's mode and map separately, then send friends the join code. See online play for joining and the crossplay guide for PC–Switch 2 and custom-map limits.

The 4.2.0 notes do not establish that every Workshop map supports every mode or device. Do not assume the new mode changes the MOD-map limitations described in the earlier crossplay announcement.

Open Nintendo's video on YouTube if you want to compare the presentation with your installed game. Video availability can vary; its title alone is not a source for an unstated scoring rule.
