Meccha Chameleon FAQ
This Meccha Chameleon FAQ collects the questions people ask most about the painted-blob hide-and-seek hit, often searched as "mecha chameleon" with a single c. Quick answers below, with links to deeper guides where it helps.
What is Meccha Chameleon?
It is a multiplayer hide-and-seek party game on PC. The twist: instead of hiding behind objects, hiders paint their plain white blob body to blend into walls, floors and props, while seekers hunt them down. Blending is a freeform skill, not a preset prop. See how to play for the basics.
How many players can play at once?
Lobbies support up to 24 players depending on the host's network. Most people find 2 to 10 (some say 2 to 12) makes for the best match. Small groups suit the Normal mode, while bigger lobbies are great for Increasing Oni. More on lobby sizes is in game modes.
Can I play with friends or with strangers?
Both. You can create a private lobby and invite friends, or jump into a public server to play with strangers. Custom Rooms let you host either kind and pick any official or subscribed Workshop map.
Is there crossplay?
There is no crossplay needed. Everyone plays on PC (Steam, Windows), so all players are on the same platform by default. See platforms for the full availability breakdown.
Is Meccha Chameleon free? Can I play it in the browser?
No. It costs 5.99 USD on Steam, and that is the only legitimate way to play. Any "play free in browser" site is unofficial or fake, so do not enter your payment or Steam login there. Full pricing and how to buy are on the price page.
How do you pronounce and spell it?
The official title is MECCHA CHAMELEON with a double c in Meccha. Many people instead type mecha chameleon (single c), mecca chameleon, or meccha cameleon — these are all common misspellings of the same paint hide-and-seek game. Meccha reads like mecha with a slightly clipped, doubled-c sound.
Who made Meccha Chameleon?
It was built by Japanese indie creator lemorion_1224 (who also self-publishes it) with artist Haganeiro. It was made in about two months in Unreal Engine with no paid marketing, then sold roughly 7 million copies in under two weeks on word of mouth alone.
How does the painting mechanic work?
You pick a spot, set your pose, use the eyedropper to sample the surface, then paint in layers (base tone, shadow and texture, then a sparing highlight). You also tune material with HSV sliders so a glossy body does not shine against a matte wall. A flat single color is the number one giveaway. The full method is in the paint guide.
What are the game modes?
Three main modes plus custom rooms: Normal (classic hide and seek, best for small lobbies), Increasing Oni (infection, caught hiders join the seekers, best for full lobbies) and Double (everyone hides then everyone seeks, fastest side wins). Details and tips are in game modes.
How do I play custom and Workshop maps?
Steam Workshop is supported. From the main menu, open the Maps/Workshop button (bottom-left), find a map on the Steam Workshop, Subscribe, let Steam auto-download it, then host a server and select it. Patch 1.2.0 even lets you swap Workshop maps mid-session without recreating the server. Making your own map is covered in the Workshop guide.
What controls do I need?
Paint mode defaults to F and the eyedropper/sample to Spacebar, with HSV sliders for tuning. A mouse and keyboard are strongly recommended over a controller for the precise color work, though a controller is supported. See the full controls and keybinds.
How many maps are there and which is easiest?
There were four maps at launch, and the game is now up to seven — Penguin Hotel, Sugarland and Osaka were added in post-launch patches. The friendliest starting map is Mansion, while Sewer is the dark, low-light map. Browse all of them on the maps page.
How does it compare to Prop Hunt?
The big difference is freedom: in Prop Hunt you snap into a preset object, but in Meccha Chameleon you paint freeform camouflage, so blending is a skill with an infinite gradient rather than picking from a list. The full comparison is on the vs Prop Hunt page.
Is there a Meccha Chameleon Discord or Reddit community?
Yes, the Meccha Chameleon community is active. There is an official Steam Community hub, and players also gather on Reddit and Discord to share clips, maps and tips. We do not link specific invites here because they can change, so the safest path is to find the current ones from the official Steam Community hub on the Steam store page.
Are there cheats or a mod menu?
No. There is no built-in cheat menu and no official mod menu in Meccha Chameleon. Third-party cheats or hacks break Steam's rules and the game's terms and can get your account banned, so we do not recommend them. The legitimate way to customize is Steam Workshop maps and the official mod kit. More on this is on the cheats page.
Is it free, and is there a demo?
No, the mecha chameleon game is not free and there is no demo. It costs 5.99 USD on Steam, which is the only legitimate way to play. The launch included a 20 percent discount, so wishlist it and watch for future sales. Details are on the free page and the price page.
Is there a Roblox version?
No. There is no official Roblox version of Meccha Chameleon and no official free browser version. Anything claiming to be "meccha chameleon on Roblox" is an unofficial clone or a scam, so do not enter your account details. The only real version is the paid Steam release.
When did Meccha Chameleon release?
It launched on June 10, 2026 on Steam for Windows PC. The store may show June 9 in some regions due to the Japan-to-US time difference. Full timing details are on the release date page.
How many people play it?
Meccha Chameleon was one of Steam's biggest hits of 2026, with a peak of about 340,534 concurrent players and roughly 7 million copies sold by June 22, 2026. The live count changes daily, so check SteamDB or the Steam charts for the current number. See the player count page.
Is there an early access or playtest version?
No. Meccha Chameleon released as a full game, not in early access, and there is no separate playtest build. Buying it on Steam gives you the complete game, and the developer keeps adding maps and patches after launch.
Can you download it on console?
No. Meccha Chameleon is PC only (Steam, Windows). It is not on Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox, Game Pass, iOS or Android, and there are no announced ports. The Steam Deck is rated Playable. See platforms for the full breakdown.
Can my PC run it, and how big is the download?
Almost certainly. The official minimum is Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5 processor, and a DirectX 11 or 12 compatible graphics card — it is a lightweight casual Unreal Engine game that runs on modest PCs and laptops. The exact download size is not listed publicly, but it is a small install, not a huge AAA download. Check the current size on the Steam page; full details are on the system requirements page.
Can you play it on Mac or MacBook?
There is no native Mac version — it is Windows and Steam only. Mac and MacBook players can try it through a Windows compatibility layer like CrossOver or Whisky, or via cloud gaming, but performance is not guaranteed. See the Mac guide for the options.
Can I play online with friends?
Yes. It is an online multiplayer game — host a private lobby and invite friends, or join public matchmaking for up to 24 players. There is no offline solo mode. If online is not working, verify your game files on Steam, check your firewall, and restart. The full online and multiplayer guide covers it.
Is it cheaper with a CD key?
Maybe, but be careful. Third-party CD-key marketplaces sometimes list it below 5.99 USD, but those keys are grey-market and can be revoked or come with no support. Buying on the official Steam store is the safe choice.
